About the Founder

The company was founded by Soichiro Honda, but before venturing into the motorcycle market, Soichiro Honda spent some years manufacturing piston rings. After some rocky starts in 1937, his piston rings company became highly successful and was sold in 1946.

 

First Honda® Motorcycle

Realizing the need for affordable transportation after WWII, Soichiro Honda started the early stages of engineering his first motorcycle which resulted in the establishment of Honda Motor Co. Ltd in 1948, followed by the company’s first successful motorcycle in 1949 which was powered by a 98cc two-stroke motor. The motorcycle was referred to as the Model D. In 1951, the Dream E model was released, which introduced the four-stroke engine.
